is an edible fungus, of the family Boletaceae and of the genus Boletus, called in the people primarily hrib, hrib ash or manatarca, whose generic name is derived from the Latin word boletus = sponge, being itself transliterated from the ancient Greek word = soil fungus, the epithet coming from the Latin word edulis = edible. It cohabits, being a symbiont mycosis (forms mycorize on the roots of trees).
The sponge also has other Romanian names, among which are: hoof, mitarca, pitarca or pitoanca. The name "hrib" comes from the Slavic language, and the name "manatarca" through the Bulgarian intermediary from the Greek word manitaria meaning "mushrooms" (in genera), see also the term mana.
